In the Culdesac district, tenants are not allowed to purchase cars

Ryan Johnson is betting on the opposite. The 40-year-old entrepreneur is the boss and co-founder of the real estate developer Culdesac, founded in 2018. What in English means dead end, in this case it applies to cars. Johnson’s mission is to create “the first car-free neighborhood in the United States built from scratch.”

He’s already working hard. Over 700 apartments plus a pool, fitness center, grocery store, restaurant, cafes, office space, bike path and dog park are currently being built on a seven-hectare former industrial site for $200 million. There are flea markets in the evening on Thursdays and a farmers’ market with fresh fruit and vegetables on Sundays.
