The first tourism bookings and the reopening of bars, restaurants and shops are starting to show signs of an awakening on the employment front. In fact, these are the activities that drive the resumption of hiring in May, according to the data released yesterday by Excelsior Unioncamere and Anpal. The companies, overall, have 1.27 million contracts scheduled in the May-July quarter. For this month there will be 389 thousand hires of which 262 thousand are in services and 127 thousand in industry, especially in those sectors of Made in Italy that have a stronger export vocation. In particular, there will be over 106 thousand entrances linked to the restaurant business, with 56,530 hires, and sales staff with 28,610. The new tourism contracts will give breathing space above all to the South, where there are the greatest expectations, although this is the area of the country that still has the widest gap compared to pre-Covid employment levels. As for industry, the greatest dynamism is in the North East.

Limiting ourselves to the May data, the forecast of 389 thousand hires means a significant growth on the previous month: we are talking about 84 thousand more contracts than in April (+ 27.5%). This increase is also accompanied by an increase in the number of companies hiring, which goes from 9% in April to 12% this month. Instead, to make a comparison that helps us to understand how the situation was before Covid we must go back to 2019: in this case the sign is negative, compared to May 2019 there are 40 thousand less total planned revenues, equal to – 9, 3%. However, industrial companies are bucking the trend, where there are over 3 thousand more entries (+ 2.8%).

The unblocking of construction sites means that there are 46 thousand searches in the buildings. In services, on the other hand, at the top of the list we find catering and the tourism supply chain.

The most sought after figures are the qualified professions in commercial and service activities where, as mentioned, there will be 106 thousand entries. This was followed by skilled workers with over 72,000, with a high demand for construction workers (over 31,000 skilled workers in construction, maintenance and finishing) and mechanics, fitters, repairers and machinery maintainers (over 10,000).
