Cecilia Strada disavows the Democratic Party on Ukraine: “Stop sending weapons, negotiations are needed”

‘Sending weapons to Ukraine didn’t work. Two years after the start of the war, if military support and sending weapons had been enough, we would be celebrating Ukraine in peace, but instead we are still counting the dead. The only way out of war is through negotiation”. This was declared by Cecilia Strada, candidate for the European elections as leader of the Democratic Party, speaking on ”L’Attimo Fuggente” hosted by Luca Telese and Giuliano Guida Bardi on the FM radio station Giornale Radio.

An intervention that effectively disavows the Democratic Party’s own line on the war in Ukraine. Cecilia Strada explained that would vote against the new shipment of weapons. “The Jewish Brigade had every right to march on April 25. Students protesting against Israel? Every citizen protesting non-violently has every right to demonstrate,” he said in the same interview. As for Zerocalcare who defected from Lucca Comics for the patronage of Israel, he commented: “His position had been legitimate and perfect”.

There was no shortage of internal replies. “The military, political, social and economic defense support for Kyiv cannot be questioned and as far as our European political family is concerned it represents a non-derogable point; a part of European security, of the future of our liberal democracies and of peace in the free world is at stake on this challenge”, wrote PD MEP Pina Picierno in a note. “If Ukraine still exists today it is because of the support that Europe and the NATO countries have constantly provided for the Ukrainian people. The only just and possible peace passes through Ukrainian territorial integrity.”
