Mon Dieu! My God! Oh my God! Language app Duolingo is laying off employees – and replacing them with artificial intelligence
The app for learning different languages, co-developed by the Swiss Severin Hacker, will in future rely on modern technology that is intended to replace human work.

Be it Spanish, French or English: For many people, the Duolingo app is the gateway to learning a new language. Because the basic courses, which are interrupted by advertising, are free. Severin Hacker from Zug is behind the successful US app. The 41-year-old once studied computer science at ETH Zurich and then went to the USA to do his doctorate at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. In 2011 he founded Duolingo there together with his doctoral supervisor Luis von Ahn. Today the company, which has been listed on the stock exchange since 2021, is worth almost $9 billion.
