M5s, Conte to the Democratic Party: “We are not your satellite. The relationship is on equal terms”

M5s, Conte: “We must clarify ourselves with the Dems. They must resolve their internal problems and decide the line”

Giuseppe Conte talks about the relationship between M5s and the Pd and warns Schlein and his party, pointing the finger at the too many differences within the Dems. “In the Democratic Party there still exists, in some – Conte tells Il Corriere della Sera – a conditioned reflex. The memory of a past in which that party had a majoritarian vocation and a hegemonic claim. Today it doesn’t work anymore the satellite scheme that revolve around them. Today there is a equal relationship. We must banish hypocrisy: we cannot hide the differences from ourselves, indeed it is precisely these that need clarification. And above all, the Movement certainly cannot be asked to abandon that driving force that has been changing the country for over 10 years. This is who we are”, adds the former prime minister.

Who then specifies: “I read in the newspapers that our objective would be to get one more vote than the Democratic Party. Or what we would aim to be we are in charge. It is not so. The difference between us and others – continues Conte – is in the DNA. How could we walk together if we then couldn’t work in the same direction not only on the topic of war conflicts but, for example, on ecological transition? Or on the moral question and of legality? Or for a policy that meets the suffering as well as the poorest also of the middle class?”. Finally: “We just want to discuss and we don’t align ourselves with the Democratic Party. The truth is that while we have made clarity within ourselves, among them there are many souls. And when one day the political vote comes we cannot afford it ambiguity“.
