ROME. “The maneuver is expansive and there is recovery, it is true, but for whom?”. This is the question – clearly provocative – posed by the secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, explaining with Pier Paolo Bombardieri the reasons for the general strike on 16 December next. “The pandemic comes out not with the injustices that existed before, but with a new social model, in which work is stable,” he stressed. The general strike will last 8 hours “in compliance with the law”, but “being in the midst of the pandemic, the entire health sector will be exempted”.
“While appreciating the effort and commitment of Prime Minister Draghi and his Executive – explained a note released yesterday – the maneuver was considered unsatisfactory by both trade unions, in particular in terms of taxation, pensions, schools, policies industrial enterprises and the fight against relocations, the fight against job insecurity especially of young people and women, non self-sufficiency, all the more so in the light of the resources available in this phase which would have allowed a more effective redistribution of wealth, to reduce inequalities and to generate balanced and structural development and stable employment ”.
With respect to the choice not shared by the CISL, the general secretary of UIL, Bombardieri, commented: «There is not a single union, but a unitary one. We divide the sensitivity in the response. I am sure that we will resume the unitary path ». With respect to the government, however, Landini leaves a door open: «The dialogue is not interrupted, it can be resumed at any time. We are ready for a confrontation on everything, but there must be very strong changes. We are not unavailable before the general strike, but on a different basis. We judge governments by what they do ”.
The secretary of the CGIL judges it “serious” that Prime Minister Draghi “was placed in the minority in the tax debate: he had proposed a solidarity contribution over 75,000 euros gross, but the government was blocked by the majority”, he observes. And this, he says, “is the demonstration that politics is not taking into account the real situation of the country”.
