Maserati moves to Mirafiori. New platform for luxury

by admin

Stellantis reorganizes the Turin production center – Stellantis Turin Manufacturing District – and moves Maserati productions from Grugliasco to Mirafiori. The official announcement by the top management of the Group arrives at the table organized at the Mise between the company, the unions and the Government. The hypothesis emerged a few months ago on the thrust of the cost rationalization plan wanted by the CEO Carlos Tavares. A hypothesis also conditioned by the low volumes of Grugliasco, where production in recent years has settled at 7 thousand units. The Maserati models, therefore – Quattroporte and Ghibli, alongside the Levante SUV – will be produced in the Group’s historic plant, which also becomes the reference pole for the electrification of the Maserati brand, as well as the “home” of the electric 500.

Stellantis has three strategic commitments with the city of Turin: the platform for the new hybrid and electric Maserati models – it will be called Folgore – which will be developed between 2022 and 2024, including the full electric versions of the Gran Cabrio and Gran Turismo, it will be installed in Mirafiori; in addition, the historic Turin plant becomes a reference point for the future Fiat 500, a family that today is worth around 200,000 cars on the market, including the share of bev. Finally, Turin, and the central bodies, remain an engineering reference point for the development of future engines.

The production of the 500 models with an internal combustion engine, currently in Poland, will gradually be closed, explained Davide Mele, contact person for Stellantis in Europe, on the other hand future volumes will be fully guaranteed by the productions in Turin. Among the first actions in the field, the company further explains in a note, “a new electrified platform dedicated to Maserati will be created which will allow the creation of the New Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio and, above all, the New Maserati Quattroporte in a period between 2022 and 2024 “.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Economic Development Giancarlo Giorgetti, the Deputy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and the Head of Labor Andrea Orlando, with the national secretariats of the metalworking unions and the representatives of the auto sector. A plan “to work on without prejudice” was the comment by Roberto Benaglia, secretary of the Fim-Cisl while Francesca Re David, general secretary of Fiom, spoke of unsatisfactory hypotheses and an industrial plan without clear commitments on models and employment . From a formal point of view, the two factories, Grugliasco and Mirafiori are a single pole – with the name «Avvocato Giovanni Agnelli Plant» – with 3,900 employees. The reorganization will not cause redundancies among the 1,100 workers of the pole on the outskirts of Turin. Over 54,000 cars have been produced in the Turin area since the beginning of the year, 78% of which was 500 bev, the flagship model of the Group’s electrification strategy.

Yesterday’s meeting leaves open the hypotheses of the possible settlement of Intel in the spaces of Mirafiori. Minister Giorgetti spoke of this in particular, supporting Turin’s “candidacy” and reiterating the government’s commitment to support new settlements. This is a project that the industrial world is also looking at with great interest, as confirmed by the president of Confindustria Carlo Bonomi during a meeting last week with the president of the Region Alberto Cirio.
