Nexi: strengthens green commitment, net zero by 2040 and climate targets for 2030

Nexi, the leading PayTech in Europe, has announced the approval of the CO2 emissions reduction targets for the entire Group by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), born from the collaboration between the CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) to accelerate companies around the world to halve emissions by 2030 and to net zero emissions by 2050.

«The commitment to sustainable development and the fight against climate change now represent an absolute priority for institutions, civil society, investors but also for companies like Nexi which can play an important role in improving the ecosystem in which they operate. Nexi, already in 2021, made a commitment to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2040, ten years earlier than the objective established by the Paris Agreement, as part of a broader integration path of ESG objectives in its business. Thanks to the transformative actions that will involve our entire value chain, from facilities and data centers, to the use of renewable energy up to the mobilization of our suppliers, our business will be increasingly sustainable and respectful of the environment, in everyone’s interest our stakeholders and with a positive impact on the entire sector”, commented Paolo Bertoluzzo, CEO of Nexi Group, in a note.

With the targets approved by the SBTi, Nexi undertakes to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions – those generated directly by business operations – by 42% by 2030, starting from the 2021 baseline. The Group also undertakes , to increase the annual supply of electricity from renewable sources from 51.7% in 2021 to 100% by 2030.

Nexi is also committed to decarbonising its supply chain, promoting the adoption of CO2 reduction targets among its suppliers. By 2027, this Scope 3 objective will involve two relevant areas of Nexi’s supply chain: purchases of goods and services, with 78% of suppliers involved, based on spend; purchases of capital goods, with 70% of suppliers, based on their greenhouse gas emissions, starting from the 2021 baseline.

Finally, in the long term, the Group is committed to reaching net zero by 2040, reducing absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% and concentrating the use of carbon credits on residual emissions. Among the transformative actions, the data center optimization project in Italy has already started, which by 2024 has the objective of reducing electricity consumption by 21.9% compared to 2021, equivalent to approximately 3.7 million kilowatt hours per year. ‘year. The reduction of energy consumption of the facilities involved and of the cooling tools, as well as widespread technological modernization, will contribute to achieving this objective. This decarbonisation path of the Nexi Group is also in line with the objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, according to the 2015 Paris Agreement.
