North Africa: cradle of global reserves of raw fertilizers

by admin

The Arab world possesses more than 80% of the world‘s reserves of all types of crude fertilizers, nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, which exist in Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria and Libya. This was underlined by Saad Ibrahim Abou Maaty Hassen, secretary general of the Arab Fertilizer Union, during a seminar organized in Tunis.

Hassen added that Tunisia has very large stocks of phosphate fertilizers and important reserves on which it is banking heavily, and that the country is on the right path to develop its economy through the production and export of phosphate and the processing of raw phosphate in other products.

He highlighted the important role of fertilizers, particularly in food supply, where Arab companies contribute up to 25% of the volume of global food production, and in international trade around 30-50%.

He also recalled the leading role played by the Tunisian Chemical Group – organizer of the seminar – in contributing to the development of agricultural production, through the production of ammonium and the treatment of environmental problems in the Gabes production units, in particular the reduction of gas emissions and solid waste management through the adoption of modern and clean technological methods in new projects.
