Pichetto: “Produce nuclear reactors at the Mirafiori site in Turin? Why not”

Produce nuclear reactors at the Mirafiori site? «If Newcleo (the startup that is investing in clean nuclear power, ndr) it goes ahead it could fit». The idea comes from the Minister of the Environment, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, on the sidelines of the “Fourth Generation Nuclear” conference this morning at Palazzo Civico. A suggestion to relaunch the plant with the support of the startup Newcleo, which is investing in clean and sustainable energy by exploiting nuclear waste.

“If the company continues like this, it could be there,” said the minister.

Estimates are 2 billion euros for the construction of each fourth generation nuclear reactor, with employment implications. A step towards the future

The minister however acknowledged that at the moment “we are still in an experimentation and research phase”reiterating the strategic role of the Enea center of Brasimone and Ansaldo, but also of the university world.

Unions on the attack

The reactions from the unions were harsh. For Fiom-Cgil secretary Edi Lazzi, «the minister would have done better to keep quiet. The relaunch of Mirafiori depends on the proposals of the metalworkers’ unions which will be at the center of the strike on 12 April”.

«We are trying to preserve and maintain an industrial site and an important supply chain for the city and our territory – he comments Rocco Cutrì, Fim Cisl secretary –. Going from industrial production to a hypothetical production of fourth generation power plants seems to me to be a hypothesis that cannot be commented on. Pichetto is committed to supporting our territory and our industry. The energy table must be opened seriously, when it opens we will talk about it.”

Of the same idea too Luigi Paone, of the Turin Uim: «At Mirafiori we build machines and we want to continue doing this, we are tired of hearing nonsense».

Grimaldi (Avs): “The Government is not counting on Stellantis”

The idea was also rejected by Marco Grimaldi, vice-president of the Greens and Left Alliance in the Chamber: «Picchetto Fratin’s joke on nuclear power in Mirafiori is ridiculous but it’s a wink to the atom lobby – He says -. The electric future of the automotive industry in Italy is currently stuck with the sole electric 500 produced in Mirafiori: continuing to give credence to Tavares’ fable on the centrality of Italy for Stellantis is madness, because Stellantis is working hard to turn off every machine without passing from collective layoffs. And without giving up asking for incentives financed with public money.”

The story of Pichetto who wants to bring us the atom is ridiculous but it reveals that even the Government knows it cannot count on Stellantis
