A new study conducted by vehicle dealers in the Dominican Republic has recommended implementing measures to improve transportation conditions and reduce traffic congestion in the country.
The study, carried out by the Association of Vehicle Dealers and Manufacturers (Acofave), suggests several key actions. These include the renewal of the vehicle fleet, selecting a reputable firm for Vehicle Technical Inspection, reducing undervaluation levels, prohibiting the import of light vehicles older than five years, and eliminating the “grace period” for importing vehicles over five years old.
Additionally, Acofave recommends adopting the “euro system” to reduce pollution from gas emissions, enforcing Pro Consumidor regulations on guarantees, and controlling unauthorized importation of new vehicles.
Furthermore, Acofave proposes establishing a pricing structure for renewing the license plates of vehicles over 10 years old and incrementally increasing it based on the age of manufacture.
The study, titled “Evolution of the Vehicle Market in the Dominican Republic and its Contributions to the National Economy Period 2014-2022,” highlights the urgency of addressing the growing vehicle fleet in the country. With over 5.8 million vehicles in circulation as of 2023, including a significant number of motorcycles, the need for regulatory measures to manage the transport sector is evident.
The report underscores that the rapid growth of the vehicle fleet, including motorcycles, cars, “jeepetas,” and private buses, necessitates immediate action to prevent environmental and economic consequences.
Moreover, the study sheds light on the impact of vehicle imports, particularly from China, on the Dominican automotive sector. It also addresses issues of unfair competition and the implications of owners switching to LPG fuel, a subsidized option, on the state’s finances.
Acofave’s recommendations for fleet renewal and adopting the Euro System for pollution control aim to modernize the sector and enhance environmental sustainability. The proposal includes gradually reducing the average age of vehicles in the fleet and aligning with European standards for emissions and fuel quality.
As the Dominican Republic grapples with increasing vehicle circulation and associated challenges, the Acofave study provides valuable insights and proposals for addressing transportation issues and promoting a more sustainable and efficient system.
