A possible Russian gas embargo, starting next autumn, would have a significant impact on Italian families and businesses. The bugbear of rationing does not only mean completely revolutionizing daily habits, but also strong economic repercussions. Bank of Italy estimates reflections on inflation accelerating to 8%, but according to Assoutenti’s estimates the rate could even exceed + 10% in the event of an embargo and this would produce a higher annual expenditure of +3,192 euros per family with direct effects on consumption , which could drop by up to -5%.

A stop to imports of Russian gas would make its effects felt in particular starting from next autumn – analyzes Assoutenti – The reduction in energy availability would inevitably lead to a rationing of supplies that would affect both production activities and families. Specifically, we will move towards a limitation of the consumption capacity of electricity for domestic use inside homes, with an inevitable reduction in the use of household appliances and various appliances by users.
For gas, there would be a probable suspension of supplies to condominiums and private homes at certain times of the day – with the consequence that families will not be able to use hot water, cook or use heating beyond a certain time – and a general limitation of the temperatures of the heating in homes as well as in public offices.
Furthermore, the rationing of supplies on production would have effects on retail prices in our country, bringing inflation to 8% and causing a sting of almost + € 3,200 per family only as a consequence of price increases – Assoutenti estimate.
“The Russian gas embargo represents the only viable solution to untie Italy from energy dependence and curb Russia’s excessive power – says President Furio Truzzi – The government cannot be caught unprepared, and must study a plan right now that, in the event of energy rationing, blocks the price lists of basic necessities, guarantees essential services and the supply of foodstuffs, and accompanies families towards a “gentle” reduction in consumption capable of limiting as much as possible the ‘impact on citizens’ daily lives ”.
