The port system Trieste-Monfalcone archives a first quarter record for container traffic and confirms its vocation intermodality, expressed by the number of trains entering and leaving the two ports (Trieste in particular). This was communicated by a note from the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea. The result is therefore both excellent news for the economic network linked to the two ports, and their evident development in the scheme of maritime transport and logistics on an international scale.

The balance of the first quarter

In this regard, the over 14 million tons of goods handled in the first quarter of 2022 for the port of Trieste, imply an increase of 19.58% compared to the same period of the previous year. The sprint in the first three months of the year finds the engine in liquid bulk (+ 27.72%) with 9,386,581 tons handled. The various goods amounted to 4,542,690 tons (+ 4.53%), while the solid bulk with 210,158 recorded a consistent recovery (+ 62.29%). A first record figure is provided by the ro-ro sector (+ 12.7%), with 80,654 units transited: this is the highest value ever on a quarterly basis.

However, the container sector also stands out, with 201,134 teu (+ 2.93%), which represents the best quarter ever for teu handled. The data shows, on the one hand, the stability of the traffic at the container terminal of pier VII and, on the other hand, the continuous growth of the sector on board the ro-ro ships to / from Turkey with 30,374 TEU (+ 20.90% ).

Also encouraging the result of railway movements (+ 13.79%) and 2,500 trains handled. Result that corresponds to the second best first quarter ever, only surpassed by the first quarter of 2019 when 2,665 trains were handled. This result is mainly attributable to the growth trend recorded at Pier VI, Siderurgica Triestina and the Logistics Platform. It is a trend that continues: in 2021 the port of Trieste was already confirmed the first railway port in Italywith 9,304 trains handled (+ 15.13% on 2020), which increase to over 10 thousand trains a year with Monfalcone.

The Monfalcone case

Turning to the statistics of the port of Monfalcone, the total volumes of the first three months of 2022 reach 820,407 tons of goods (+ 9.08%).
