The Italian maritime economy is worth it 161 billion euros: is the data that emerged from XII National Report on the Sea Economy of the National Observatory on the Sea Economy Obsermare and the Study Center of the Tagliacarne Chambers of Commerce of Unioncamere presented at the third National Summit on the Economy of the Sea Blue Forum underway in Gaeta.

“Con ObservMare – our National Observatory on the Economy of the Sea, with the Study Center of the Guglielmo Tagliacarne Chambers of Commerce and as a chamber system, we have been investing in the analysis of the data of this economy for over 14 years, convinced that the study of the value of Italian maritime economy is increasingly an indispensable element to support the strategic and economic policies of our nation”. – This was said at the opening of the panel “Preview of the XII Unioncamere National Report” by Antonello Testa – Coordinator of the OsserMare National Observatory of the Sea Economy and Managing Director for the Sea Economy of Informare, the Special Agency of the Frosinone Latina Chamber of Commerce.

“Today, thanks to the valuable presentation by Gaetano Fausto Esposito, Director of the Tagliacarne Study Centre, we will give the first previews of our XII 2024 report which we will presumably present, in its definitive version, between the end of May and the beginning of June. Our Rcontribution has now become a timely reference for all stakeholdersr, not just national, whether public or private. Every year we invest more and more, ensuring that the Report becomes a more advanced tool that allows us to verify the movements of the markets of the Sea System, in order to understand and anticipate future dynamics. From this year we will begin a traveling road show through which we will present a specific focus on the regional sea economy for each of the 15 Italian coastal regions. We are preparing a dashboard, which will presumably be available from next summer, which will allow anyone to use our data by combining them according to needs. I am sure that our Report can contribute, together with politics and all those present, to defining the scenario and maritime strategy of our nation”, commented Testa.

The first data that emerged tell us two fundamental things: first of all that ours is a resilient economy, and we can see this from the fact that in a year in which the number of total businesses in the economy fell by 1%, that of Sea Economy remains somewhat stationary, going from 228,190 in 2022 to 227,975 at the end of 2023, practically a drop of less than 0.1%; Secondly, we note that the maritime economy is booming and continues to occupy an ever-increasing space in construction of Italian wealth, so much so that the total Added Value – given by the sum of the direct added value equal to 59 billion today and the indirect value equal to 102 billion – is worth 161 billion which has grown enormously compared to the approximately 143 billion in 2021 and which today is worth 9.1% of the entire national economy. I believe that there are not many macro economic sectors that can boast such a strong weight on our entire wealth. The work that politics, all the stakeholders and in general all of us together are carrying out is bearing fruit; we must continue on this path, increasingly increasing and improving the quality and quantity of investments in this macro sector”, concluded Testa.
