The first power plant to produce electricity by gasifying rice husk is under construction in Senegal. The plant, located in the Saint Louis region in the north of the country, is expected to come into operation in July 2024. In addition to electricity, rice waste is also expected to be used to produce charcoal.

The plant is financed by the BioStar project, coordinated by the French Cirad institute and financed by the European Union as part of the European DeSira program (Development Smart Innovation through Research in Agriculture).
