Support for the spread of 5G connectivity along approximately 2,645 kilometers of ‘European corridors’; extra-urban roads prepared for the new technology and areas with market failure also for 5G, as already foreseen for fiber. They are among the cornerstones, within the Italian strategy for the ultra-broadband ‘Towards the gigabit society’ of Mitd and Mise, of the “Italia 5G” plan prepared by the MItd and Mise which provides for an allocation of 2.02 billion euros per in order to fully satisfy the need for mobile connectivity. Tenders within the first quarter of 2022, awarding within the second quarter of next year

Once the mapping for the identification of the existing infrastructures and the operators’ plans has been completed, the public consultation on the intervention scheme and on the target areas will be held. Once the opinion of the National Regulatory Authority has been obtained and the measure notified to the Commission, it is estimated that the 5G tenders will start between the fourth quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022; the award between the first and second quarter of 2022.

420 million for 5G corridors

Returning to the appropriations, 420 million are foreseen for the 5G corridors, to support the spread of connectivity according to an area of intervention that will be defined in detail on the basis of the results of the mapping and through discussions with the European Commission. 600 million are also expected for the construction of fiber optic backhaling on approximately 10 thousand kilometers of highly trafficked extra-urban roads to support the adoption of 5G applications in key sectors such as safety and mobility. To cover the areas where there will be no adequate mobile connection, the possibility, in compliance with state aid rules, is also contemplated in the NRP to allocate resources to measures to support the demand for ultra-broadband services.

Bassanini: “appropriate action on the demand side with tax credit and bonus”

“It is opportune – writes Franco Bassanini, president of Astrid in his preface to the book The future of 5G – market and technology evolution edited by Maurizio Decina and Antonio Perrucci – an action also on the demand side, both business and residential, through the appeal to tools such as tax credit and bonuses, tested on other recent occasions both in the electronic communications sector / pc, tablet, broadband access) and in other sectors (ecological super-bonus for building renovations, super-bonus earthquake ) “. Compared to the 2015 ultra-broadband plan, comments Perrucci, director of the laboratory on the Astrid-Led digital ecosystem, “there is a big news, namely the role of 5G and the prediction of white areas, in the event of market failure, also for mobile telephony which will be confirmed by the mapping ».
