Melbourne (dts news agency) – Ferrari achieved a double victory in the Formula 1 race in Australia. Carlos Sainz crossed the finish line first in Melbourne ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc. McLaren driver Lando Norris completed the podium.
The whole thing was made possible because defending champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who dominated the entire last season as well as the first races of this year, retired after just a few laps due to a technical defect. Verstappen was able to prevail right at the start, but Sainz was able to overtake him on the second lap. On the fourth lap, the rear brake of Versappen’s car caught fire and he had to park it. For the first time since Singapore 2023, someone other than the Red Bull driver stood on top of the podium – Sainz was the winner then too.
Oscar Piastri (McLaren), Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and Yuki Tsunoda (Racing Bulls) finished in the points behind the podium on Sunday. The only German driver Nico Hülkenberg (Haas) scored two points for the World Championship standings in ninth place, while his teammate Kevin Magnussen scored one point in tenth place. The next race takes place in Japan in two weeks.
