Stadler sells more hydrogen trains to southern Italy

After the initial call for six hydrogen trains for Calabria, the local transport company ordered three more such trains from the railway manufacturer in eastern Switzerland. The order is likely to be worth around 40 million euros.

Stadler is not yet doing big business with hydrogen trains. But little by little things are moving forward. The railway manufacturer from eastern Switzerland has manufactured its first vehicle for California. The delivery of four additional hydrogen trains was agreed in mid-October 2023, with an option for up to 25 additional such vehicles. In mid-2023, Stadler also received two orders from southern Italy: six hydrogen trains each for Sardinia and Calabria.

Now the transport company Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC) is stepping up and ordering three more of these vehicles from Stadler from the framework agreement, which provides for up to 15 hydrogen trains. These are expected to be used in regional and local transport on the narrow-gauge network (950 mm) of the Calabria region from 2026. Stadler is the first railway manufacturer in the world to produce narrow-gauge hydrogen trains. The vehicles for southern Italy are manufactured at the Stadler headquarters in Bussnang.

Calabria gives itself an ecological touch

According to the management of the FdC, Calabria wants to modernize regional transport and make it sustainable by using hydrogen as a fuel for transport. Overall, total investments of over 400 million euros are planned. As part of the ecological change, in addition to the purchase of hydrogen trains, this also includes the construction of a hydrogen production plant, investments in rail infrastructure and new buses.

The Stadler trains ordered each consist of two cars and a power pack in the middle. This houses the fuel cells and the hydrogen tanks. The low-floor trains are 50 meters long and can accommodate 155 passengers, 89 of whom are seated. Stadler says nothing about the order value of the three trains. The first six of these trains will be sold for 78 million euros. Therefore, the new order is likely to be worth around 39 million euros or 13 million euros per train.
