Made in Italy high school, what a flop: the program is not agri-food

Announced as a new course of study, it is actually an almost photocopy of the economic and social direction of the High School of Human Sciences: the CDX government’s Madein Italy high school is already a flop. This was revealed by Gamberosso.it. Let’s rewind the tape for a moment: the prime minister had announced last April, during Vinitaly, with the support of her allies in the League the project of the Made in Italy high school. An initiative has now become a concrete reality. Starting from the next school year, students will have the opportunity to enroll in this new educational path, promoted by human sciences high schools with the economic-social option.

The circular containing the operational instructions for enrolling in the first classes of the new high school path for the 2024-2025 school year was recently published and sent to the educational institutions and the Regions. Parents will be able to choose this path through the Unica platform starting January 23, 2024 (while for the other addresses the date is the 18th). However, from a bureaucratic point of view, this procedure could cause some inconvenience for parents, since they will not know until the last moment whether the course will be activated in their city. The heads of human sciences high schools must in fact request authorization from the regional school offices to start the new study program by January 15th. Between 15 and 20 January, the regional school offices will send the request to Rome, which will ratify the membership by inserting it on the platform.

This Made in Italy High School is intended to replace the economic-social direction of the Human Sciences High School, but with voluntary participation by the educational institutions and the addition of a few more hours of art history to remove some to the foreign language. Despite the enthusiastic announcement, many institutes, from Voghera to Bari, have already declined the offer, citing preference for the current economic-social direction and the short timeframe for implementation, indicating a possible lukewarm reception for the new course. The study plan of the Made in Italy high school aims to develop entrepreneurial skills related to economics and law, focusing on the promotion of typical Italian production sectors. However, there is a discrepancy between the initial expectations and the actual curriculum. Despite the promises, the program does not include subjects related to agri-foodsuch as the history of Italian cuisine, oenology or food and wine tourism.

The curricular structure proposed for the two-year period includes 891 hours of lessons, distributed between subjects such as Italian language and literature, history, geography, law, political economy, foreign language, mathematics with computer science, natural sciences, physical and sports sciences, history of art and Catholic religion or alternative activities. However, the “Made in Italy” label appears more like political bait than a real proposal for educational enrichment. The true effectiveness of the Made in Italy high school will only be assessed in the coming months, based on the number of institutions that will join and the students who will enroll. At the moment, the program does not seem to fully correspond to initial expectations, leaving open doubts about its ability to effectively represent and promote Italian excellence in the educational landscape.
