Associate professor of engineering Ali Hajbabaie of North Carolina State University and Henry Liu, professor of civil engineering at the University of Michigan, are leading this research. They envision a scenario where a white light would indicate that control of the intersection is in the hands of autonomous vehicles, simplifying the process for drivers.

Liu believes that changes could happen sooner than expected due to the rapid progress of artificial intelligence. The U.S. Department of Transportation has even provided a grant to test real-time traffic light changes using speed and location data from cars.

A pilot program in the Detroit suburb of Birmingham is already underway, where traffic lights currently operate on a fixed timer without considering traffic flow. This new approach could revolutionize traffic management, making it more efficient and cost-effective.

While fully autonomous vehicles are not yet widely available, companies like Tesla, Mercedes, and Waymo are making strides towards this new reality. Waymo has already implemented alternative traffic systems in select cities, proving the potential for adaptation to autonomous vehicles.
