The offshore wind power sector takes off in Taranto

The key points

  • The project
  • The objectives
  • The supply chain

The first offshore wind farm in the Mediterranean is a reality after many years of obstacle course. It was inaugurated on 21 April with an investment of about 80 million euros, has a total capacity of 30 MW, can ensure a production of over 58 thousand MWh, but now the next step for Renexia, the company of the Toto group that has the project is to position itself in the Taranto area with other initiatives and above all to develop an industrial chain. Riccardo Toto, general manager of Renexia, says this in the meeting with Confindustria Taranto and the associated companies.
«Let’s start a path – declares Toto -, we hope it will be pragmatic. It is a path linked to five points ranging from school to hydrogen, from electric mobility to new technologies. A complete project that covers many points, we hope it can be realized here in Taranto ». For hydrogen, adds Toto, “we have a project, in the sense that we would like to help young people to enter this world in a different way than they are doing now. We believe that the production of hydrogen – and companies that already make electrolysers were present at our meeting – could be the future and therefore start a partnership path with them in order to then begin selling hydrogen to third parties “. For electric mobility, on the other hand, says the CEO of Renexia, “we turn in particular to public administrations with all-round projects ranging from efficiency and installation of columns to the supply of electric vehicles. We would like to start with some administrations in the area to go ahead with this type of project ».
Regarding the operation of the wind farm in Mar Grande built by Renexia and consisting of 10 blades, the dg Toto explains that the “blades are all on, there are 4 that are producing energy, but within the month they will all be 10 and we are absolutely happy . The blades are now starting up ”. While on the possibility of developing wind power industrial chains in Taranto, the CEO of Renexia observes that “in our heads, in our ideas, Taranto can absolutely become the center for a series of pilot projects. In particular, the first one we talked about is that linked to the wave motion to produce energy. We will now take the necessary steps with the various authorities and then we would like to start working on this thing here. Taranto – says Toto – can become for us a sort of open-air research center, we have a series of pilot projects ». Regarding the supply of components for wind energy, this speech, which is part of the industrial chain, “we spoke with Leonardo – announces the CEO of Renexia – and we believe that the natural outlet of this area is the production of real blades and own “.
“The conditions exist to create an industrial chain of wind power and today what we heard from Renexia is what they would like to do, that is to use Taranto for pilot projects, for innovative projects”, finally comments the president of Confindustria Taranto, Salvatore Toma.
