New York City’s New Garbage Collection Method Goes Viral on Social Media
A recent post on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, went viral last Friday after the announcement of a new method for collecting garbage from containers in New York City. However, the news was met with amusement in Spain, where a similar side loading system has been in place for years.
The viral post came from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York City (MTA), which announced the inauguration of a new subway model, the R211T. The new model boasts open walkways, wider doors, improved digital wayfinding, and more accessible seats.
The reaction from Spanish social media users was one of disbelief and irony towards the “new” subway model. Spanish journalist Pedro Torrijos pointed out that New York’s new continuous trains were already launched in Madrid’s metro system back in 1999.
“It seems that this is the week of ‘news’ in New York City,” commented Pedro Torrijos, referring to New York’s excitement over the new subway model. “They are freaking out, something that the Madrid Metro has already had in its good years,” he added, pointing out that the continuous trains without separate carriages have been in operation in Madrid for over two decades.
The online reaction highlights the differences in public transportation systems between different regions and the varied responses to technological advancements.
