Toyota relaunches the challenge on city cars: the Aygo X mini urban crossover arrives

by admin

Aygo X has been unveiled in its final form, after a concept-format appearance. It is a “mini suv” (the X of the name indicates a crossover) which, with very small dimensions, relaunches Toyota’s presence in an important sector, but less and less numerous in terms of quantity and quality of the offer, despite being composed of popular cars, those for everyone. The Japanese house has also been left without the French partner Stellantis (formerly Psa) who will not follow up on Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108, the different twins of the well-known Aygo, which since 2005 has played the role of entry level in the range of the Japanese brand. With Aygo X, Toyota returns to segment A (which in Italy in the first ten months of this year ranks third and represented 17.2% of the total market with 219,802 units) with a more attractive crossover format proposal and in line with the suv-mania prevailing even in the era of electrified cars. Speaking of powertrain: Aygo X, maintains a minimalist setting (which also made the fortune of Aygo, 108 and C1) and therefore there is no hybrid variant, despite being a Toyota, the house that led to this type of success of engines.

The car was born from the Aygo X Prologue concept and is based on the now famous Ga-B platform of Toyota New Global Architecture (Tnga), introduced for the first time with the new Yaris (the current car of the year 2021 in Europe) and more recently with the new Yaris Cross.

The floor is characterized by a modified and resized section of the rear frame, while the car body is characterized by reduced front and rear overhangs.

With a length of 3,700mm, the new Aygo X is 235mm longer than its predecessor, with the wheelbase increasing by 90mm. The total width of the car body has increased by 125 millimeters compared to the current Aygo, and reaches 1,740 millimeters. As a result, the front seats have been spaced 20 mm apart. The trunk capacity increases by over 60 liters compared to the previous generation, for a total of 231 liters. Being a crossover, the ground clearance is also increased by 65 millimeters, for a total of 1,525 mm.

Its agility is also emphasized by the small turning radius of just 4.7 meters: one of the lowest in the segment. And the driver can also count on the seat raised by 55 mm. In addition, the viewing angle of the A-pillar has been increased to 24º for better visibility.
