Toyota Introduces All-New 4Runner with Bold Design and Advanced Technology
Toyota has unveiled the latest generation of its iconic off-road truck, the 4Runner. The new 4Runner features a bold new look and incorporates advanced technology, premium materials, a variety of options, and enhanced safety features. This all-new sixth-generation model promises to deliver unmatched capability and luxury for adventure enthusiasts. Production of the 4Runner will take place at Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara plant in Japan, with the vehicle set to arrive in the United States in fall 2024.
Dave Christ, Toyota Group vice president and general manager, expressed his excitement about the new release, stating, “This all-new 4Runner offers incredible versatility and capability that complements our existing truck lineup. With over three million units sold in the last 40 years, this sixth-generation model brings a fresh new look and features while maintaining the rugged style and performance that our customers have come to love.”
The latest 4Runner is built on Toyota’s TNGA-F global truck platform, which it shares with popular models like the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia. This platform features a high-strength boxed steel ladder frame, multi-link rear suspension, and a double wishbone front suspension. These enhancements not only increase the vehicle’s strength but also improve driving comfort and stability. The 4Runner can accommodate up to 6,000 pounds (2,720 kg) of towing capacity, thanks to its robust frame and advanced i-FORCE MAX powertrain.
The design of the new 4Runner draws inspiration from its legendary off-road capabilities and outdoor adventure heritage. CALTY, Toyota’s Michigan-based design team, led the design process, focusing on a blend of past traditions and future innovations. The vehicle’s design language is influenced by desert racing, featuring a high lift, lean bodywork, big tires, and rugged athleticism. Notable design elements include a return to the “wraparound” glass and the iconic folding rear window, paying homage to the early generations of the 4Runner.
Under the hood, the 4Runner will be offered with two powerful and efficient 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged powertrains. The i-FORCE engine delivers 278 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle will also introduce the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with a 48 hp electric motor for a total system power output of 326 hp and 630 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful 4Runner ever.
The 4Runner’s off-road capabilities are further enhanced with the addition of a sway bar disconnect mechanism, improved approach and departure angles, and the available Multi-Terrain Select system. The vehicle will be offered in various drive modes, including 2WD, part-time 4WD, and full-time 4WD, catering to different preferences and terrains. Additionally, advanced features such as CRAWL Control and Downhill Assist Control provide added confidence during challenging off-road conditions.
On the technology front, the new 4Runner boasts a range of features, including an 8″ or 14″ multimedia touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, wireless charging pad, and a digital gauge cluster. Safety is prioritized with six airbags and the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 package, offering advanced driver assistance systems like pre-collision detection, lane change alert, cruise control, and more.
