Japanese brand Uniqlo has filed a lawsuit against Chinese fast fashion retailer Shein over allegations of selling knockoffs of its viral shoulder bag. The mini round shoulder bag from Uniqlo gained popularity on TikTok and other social media platforms, leading to it being frequently sold out. The bag’s popularity also led to a wave of knockoff products, prompting Uniqlo to take legal action. The lawsuit demands the immediate cessation of sales of imitation products and compensation for damages. Shein is currently investigating the matter and claims to respect the intellectual property rights of others. This is not the first time Shein has faced legal action or controversy, as last year, three graphic designers sued the retailer for copyright infringement, and it was also sued by rival Temu for using aggressive and illegal tactics to thwart competition. Uniqlo credits the shoulder bag for sparking considerable interest on social media and expanding its customer base among women and younger shoppers. This story follows a trend of fast fashion retailers facing legal issues related to design infringement and competition.
