Volvo Cars global sales of 45,952 units in May accounted for 7.9% of pure electric vehicles

Volvo Cars reported on June 6 that its global retail sales in May fell 28.3% year-on-year to 45,952 vehicles, with sales of Recharge models (including pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles) accounting for total sales. 33.6%, a year-on-year increase of 10 percentage points. It is worth mentioning that the proportion of Volvo Cars pure electric vehicles increased to 7.9% compared with the same period last year.

Volvo Cars noted that while its global sales have declined, demand for its cars remains strong, especially for its Recharge models.

Volvo Cars lost some car production in May as the spread of the coronavirus continued to put more pressure on already strained global supply chains. Recently, the company has seen signs of improving supply and expects a gradual increase in production. Orders for Volvo’s pure electric vehicles continue to increase. However, the spread of the new crown epidemic affected the company’s pure electric vehicle production in the second quarter and will adversely affect its pure electric vehicle deliveries as a percentage of total deliveries in the third quarter.

From a market perspective, in May, Volvo Cars’ sales in major markets showed a year-on-year decline. Among them, Volvo Cars European sales fell 24.3% year-on-year to 18,752 units, and the sales of Recharge models accounted for 47%. The company delivered 9,372 vehicles in the U.S., down 29.1% year over year, with Recharge models accounting for 35.7%. The company delivered 9,488 vehicles in China, down 43.8% year-on-year.

The XC60 remained Volvo Cars’ best-selling model globally in May, with sales falling to 15,177 from 19,835 in 2021; followed by the XC40, which fell to 12,097 from 20,350 in 2021; the XC90 was the company’s third-best-selling model , sales fell to 8,790 from 9,961 in 2021.
