Originally, the SPD’s idea behind the cut in agricultural aid was that farmers were not part of the Social Democratic core clientele anyway and were therefore more likely to reach them, while cuts in the bloated social budget were ruled out from the outset.

With their resistance, however, the farmers have managed to stir up a general mood in the country that is characterized by dissatisfaction, fears of prosperity and the feeling that they are being controlled more and more “from above”. That’s why not only right-wing radicals and all sorts of angry citizens are joining the farmers’ protests, but also increasingly small self-employed people and normal employees who have been hit hard by inflation and the explosion in energy prices for a long time.
