If Beijing resorted to military adventurism, it would pay an extraordinarily high price. Beijing can hardly be mistaken about this. That’s why they try to achieve their goals with threats. Taiwan should become discouraged and stop believing that it has a self-determined future. This strategy has not worked so far. At the same time, pressure should be exerted so that the rest of the world, especially Taiwan’s friends, declare its cause lost and China can act without consideration. It is all the more important that we as Western democracies demonstrate our solidarity with the democracy of Taiwan.
