In 2023, Disney dominated the list of Hollywood’s most money-losing movies, with four out of the top five films coming from the entertainment giant. Topping the list is “Captain Marvel 2,” which suffered a massive loss of $237 million.
The film, with a production cost of $270 million and marketing expenses of $110 million, only managed to bring in $88 million in global box office revenue. This disappointing performance has raised questions about the once seemingly invincible Marvel Studios brand.
Following closely behind is the DC superhero movie “The Flash,” which lost $155 million despite a global box office of $271.3 million. The movie, with a production cost of $200 million and marketing expenses of $120 million, failed to recoup its costs.
Other Disney movies on the list include “Raiders of the Lost Ark” with a loss of $143 million, “Star Wish” with a loss of $131 million, and “The Haunting of Hill House” with a loss of $117 million.
These staggering losses underscore the unpredictable nature of the film industry and serve as a reminder that even the biggest studios are not immune to box office flops. It remains to be seen how Disney and other studios will pivot in response to these financial setbacks.
