[Epoch Times, February 28, 2022]Search engine Yahoo (Yahoo) officially announced that its e-mail mailbox will stop serving in mainland China from February 28, and users will no longer be able to receive or send e-mails from mainland China.

According to IT House reports, Yahoo previously announced that from November 1, 2021, users will not be able to use Yahoo’s products and services from the mainland, but still retain a small number of services such as mailboxes. Now it is further announced that Yahoo Mail will stop serving in the mainland from February 28, and will not be able to send and receive emails at that time.

Yahoo officially stated that the backup address book, schedule, etc. can be downloaded before February 28. After the 28th, it will no longer be able to receive or send emails from the mainland. In addition, PayPal has also sent a notification to users that if it is bound to Yahoo Mail, it needs to be changed to another email address as soon as possible.

Yahoo announced its withdrawal from the Chinese market last year, with a statement at the time saying: “Given China’s increasingly challenging business and legal environment, from November 1, Yahoo’s suite of services will no longer be available in mainland China.”

The Wall Street Journal reported in November that Yahoo’s departure from China was largely symbolic, as the company began shutting down its main service in China in 2013. Still, Yahoo’s exit is a reminder of the growing challenges foreign companies face operating in China, including stricter data security and privacy regulations, geopolitical tensions and strict regulations related to COVID-19.

Cameron Johnson, a management consultant at FAO Global, an international business and consulting firm based in Shanghai, told Huari that newly introduced privacy and data security regulations have increased uncertainty and compliance for operations in China cost, and some companies would rather exit than deal with increased business risk.

Yahoo has been severely criticized by U.S. congressmen. In 2007, Yahoo handed over the data of two Chinese dissidents to Beijing, which ended up in jail.

According to public information, the Yahoo China website was launched in September 1999, and in August 2005, Yahoo China was wholly-owned by Alibaba Group. In 2013, the Yahoo mail service in China was closed; in 2015, the Yahoo Beijing Global R&D Center was closed, and about 350 employees were laid off.
