Zalando, Ynap and About You team up for a greener supply chain

Environmental protection pushes fashion e-tailers to an unprecedented alliance: Ynap, Zalando and About You, in fact, have announced a collaboration to reduce carbon dioxide emissions within the fashion supply chain. Which is investing in recycled materials, less impactful productions but also less and less centralized logistics which, to reduce time and negative effects on the environment, try to use proximity shops.

Specifically, e-tailers want to contribute to “educating” their partner brands by launching a virtual learning platform to support the brands in question in measuring greenhouse gas emissions and in defining objectives, in line with climate science, to in order to reduce these emissions. A tailor-made program – in line with the reduction objectives already set with the Science Based Targets initiative (Sbti), which will then have to approve the individual initiatives – which will be available at no additional cost for the brand partners of About You, Yoox-Net à porter and Zalando. The pilot phase will start in the fall, while the program will be open to all from 2023.

Two objectives: to intensify climate action across the sector, to achieve a wider impact and systems transformation, while contributing to the reduction of emissions produced by the value chains of the three online retailers.

«Decarbonising the supply chain in collaboration with suppliers, brands, logistics and packaging partners and now also with our competitors is a powerful lever to drive a major change in the fashion industry. We aim to have 90% of our partners (in terms of emissions) set science-based targets by 2025, and the new learning platform is a key initiative to achieve this ambitious goal, “said David Schneider. co-ceo of Zalando. This is echoed by Geoffroy Lefebvre, CEO of Ynap: “The next step is to prioritize the investment of brand partners in the various phases of their climate path, supporting them in defining objectives based on scientific data”.

«We are facing a momentum that could change the sector by aligning the processes of reducing greenhouse gas emissions with science. Goals for more than 1,500 companies were approved by Sbti in July 2022. We have set science-based goals, approved by Sbti and are now benefiting from our commitment. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, the targets of 46.6% of our partners were approved in February 2022. We invite other business partners to do the same », said Hannes Wiese, co-founder and CEO of About You.
