ALESTORM – Voyage Of The Dead Marauder

ALESTORM
Voyage Of The Dead Marauder
(Folk Metal | Power Metal)

Label: Napalm Records
Format: (EP)

Release: 22.03.24

The signs for Chris Bowes continue to point to a storm. In 2021 he started with his new band WIZARDTHRONE, with the other project SABADU there were first signs of life and last year there was the new GLORYHAMMER album with the new singer. In addition, the last ALESTORM album was released in 2022. And it is precisely for the latter band that he is now taking advantage of the good winds and releasing a small but fine EP with “Voyage Of The Dead Marauder”.

The EP is intended to follow on from the album, which is now two years old, and was recorded with producer Lasse Lammert (LSD Studios). The man took over production, maxing and mastering and did a great job. The varied material blasts well out of the speakers and lets the genre mix of folk, power metal and other genre influences shine in the best sound.

The title track, which also includes Patty Gurdy, who has often worked with ALESTORM, but also AYREON and FEUERSCHWANZ, is a pure pirate anthem with playful keys and a cool duet. A song that suits the Scottish pirates through and through and is easy on the ear with its driving chorus. “Uzbekistan” is a party number with a maritime tone and a certain drinking mood in the chorus. There are also a few growls and a wild synth part that makes you go crazy. With “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate”, a THE ARROGANT WORMS cover, things get quintessentially Scottish and the short “Cock” goes all out in its 90 seconds, presents all the important band trademarks and gets you shouting along loudly again. The interlude “Sea Shanty 2” is once again an 8-bit soundtrack, which Bowes seems to have really been into for some time now.

All in all, ALESTORM deliver the usual and expected fare and yet they manage to deliver a few surprises and expand their sound by a few nuances. But the rule of thumb for the band still applies: you either hate them or love them.
