Ukrainian shells killed at least 28 people at a bakery in the Russian-occupied city of Lysychansk, Moscow-appointed authorities said.
There was at least one child among those killed on Saturday, according to a statement on Telegram from local leader Leonid Pasechnik. Another 10 people were rescued from the rubble by emergency services, he added.
Ukrainian authorities in kyiv did not comment on the incident.
But Moscow and kyiv have increasingly resorted to long-distance attacks this winter, with positions virtually immobile along the 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) front after nearly two years of war.
The military government of Ukraine’s Sumy region said on Sunday that Russian forces had shelled the region in 16 separate attacks the previous day, firing on the towns of Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka and Esman, near the front.
