Director Steven Spielberg’s production company, Amblin, recently signed an agreement with Netflix to “produce multiple plot videos each year” for the latter. According to Variety reports, Amblin’s mission is to produce at least two new films a year, but there is still no definite statement about whether Spielberg himself will be in charge of directing. At present, Amblin also has a contract with Universal, which means that in the future they will be responsible for production projects from the two major film and television giants in the industry.
“For Amblin, telling good stories is always the core of all our work. From the moment Ted Sarandos (Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer) started discussing cooperation with me, we knew that there was a new story telling, A great opportunity to reach the audience in a new way,” Spielberg said.
In fact, Amblin had collaborated with Netflix before this, and its production of “The Trial of Seven Gentlemen in Chicago” received as many as six Oscar nominations this year. But considering Spielberg’s negative comments on streaming movies in the past (he once said publicly, “As long as you use the TV format, you’re doing TV movies”), in any case, Netflix’s signing with Amblin is still fine. Said to be of extraordinary significance.
