Pan Chongwei, a renowned photography master in the entertainment industry, is gearing up for his upcoming exhibition titled “Your Youth Is Also My Youth.” The exhibition will showcase rare images of 90s superstars such as Zhang Yusheng, Zhang Huimei, Wang Jie, Lin Zhiying, Wu Qilong, and Lan Xinmei, among others.
The process of preparing for the exhibition has been a monumental task for Pan Chongwei, as he had to meticulously restore damaged traditional film that was affected by moisture during the epidemic. He even had to seek medical attention for his eyes due to the mold on the film. However, the photographer was determined to preserve these iconic images and reveal the untold stories behind each photo.
Securing the venue for the exhibition and obtaining artist portrait authorizations have been significant challenges for Pan Chongwei. Despite the hurdles, he managed to secure the Taipei Pop Music Center as the venue and gained authorization from artists such as Miao Xiuli, Wu Qilong, and a surprising endorsement from Lin Zhiying, who personally signed off on the use of his photos.
In reflecting on his interactions with the artists, Pan Chongwei expressed admiration for their resilience and authenticity. He shared touching moments with artists like Wang Jie, whose journey from driving a taxi to pursuing a music career has been a source of inspiration. Pan Chongwei also highlighted a candid moment captured with Wang Jie in downtown Vancouver, showcasing the artist’s raw and unfiltered persona.
As the exhibition takes shape, with support from figures like Huang Yunling, chairman of the Taipei Pop Music Center, Pan Chongwei is thrilled to share these timeless images that capture the essence of youth and authenticity in the entertainment industry. The exhibition promises to be a nostalgic journey through the 90s, celebrating the iconic figures who have left a lasting impact on the industry.
