“Not Today, Satan” is an attempt to shine a light on the ever-present darkness
Is there actually a (stoner) rock academy for trios in Berlin? Somehow it seems to me as if there isn’t much else there anymore. But that shouldn’t be a criticism, because with well-known trios like KADAVAR or DIE ÄRZTE, there are more than just prominent and very successful representatives. With DEAF WOLF there is now a new one: “Crackingly loud music against the noise of a collapsing world”.
Although new isn’t entirely true, because they’ve already released four recordings in the last decade and their latest work with the resounding title “Not Today, Satan” shows that they’ve been able to gain a lot of experience and know how to use it. Rocking, groovy and yet somehow relaxing, you riff, drum and sing your way through the pleasant compositions that breathe the desert air, well forward but also catch your ear.
What’s also interesting are the lyrical sources of inspiration, which are rather atypical with a wide variety of topics such as mythology, science, comic heroes and B-movies. Musically, however, you don’t care about innovation and say yourself that you want to entertain and at least be original. But attention is paid to variety. Sometimes relaxed rocking, sometimes funky, sometimes with stoner flair or with cool pop appeal, which is also countered by dark, melancholic moments, the Berliners know how to entertain, but also sometimes get under your skin.
