Embracing Tradition: Yancheng City’s Traditional Opera Culture Week Celebrates Mei School Peking Opera

Yancheng City, China – The “Wetland Liuyun Liyuan Huazhang” Traditional Opera Culture Week kicked off in Yancheng City on the evening of May 11th, aiming to promote the creative transformation and innovative development of China’s excellent traditional culture.

The opening performance of the week-long event was the “National Essence Liufang” Peking Opera celebrity concert, which was held at the Grand Theater of the Municipal Cultural and Art Center. Chen Weihong, member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Party Committee and Minister of the Propaganda Department, was in attendance to watch the spectacular performance.

The concert was a special tribute to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Mei Lanfang and the 90th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Mei Baojiu. Renowned Peking Opera artists from the National Peking Opera Theater of China and the Beijing Peking Opera Theater, including Yu Kuizhi, Li Shengsu, Hu Wenge, Kang Wansheng, and Fan Yuyuan, performed classic Mei School arias such as “The Drunken Concubine”, “The Phoenix Returns to the Nest”, and “Hate of Life and Death”.

The event featured famous Mei School Peking Opera performers from Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Zhejiang, showcasing the unique charm of Mei School art and the richness of traditional Chinese culture. The concert was hosted by Bai Yansheng, a well-known opera host.

In addition to the celebrity concert, the Traditional Opera Culture Week will feature performances by the National Peking Opera Company, Beijing Peking Opera Company, Shanghai Shanghai Theater Company, and Jiangsu Province Xi Opera Troupe. The lineup includes the “Culture of Chinese Culture” Peking Opera Masters Concert, Shanghai Opera’s “Arhat Money”, and Xi Opera’s “Pearl Tower”.
