Susana Ballesteros, the Voice Behind the GPS in Latin America, to Perform in Mexico City
Mexico City.- Anyone who has used the GPS in Spanish anywhere in Latin America locates Susana Ballesteros’ voice perfectly. Born in Madrid, Spain, and living in Los Angeles for more than a decade, the journalist and composer also explained that she gave voice to the so-called Global Positioning System (GPS), which is available in Google and Waze apps.
“I had to go through a long process of learning the accent, of making a place for myself in the world of speech here in the United States, starting with the ‘s’, which are Latin,” shared Susana in an interview from Los Angeles.
The experience of voicing the GPS was surreal for Susana, who visualized a friendly and clear intonation when recording her voice. Before the opportunity to lend her voice to the GPS, she had never imagined the impact it would have on her professional life.
Susana, who is married to Argentine journalist Gerardo Pratt and has two daughters, will be performing for the first time in Mexico City on April 18 at the Foro del Tejedor. The 42-year-old artist, known for songs like “Déjame” and “Maravillamente Rara,” expressed her excitement about sharing her music with a Mexican audience.
“I always wanted to sing, and I was very embarrassed to say it, and I didn’t believe I could be a singer. It was such a great passion that I idealized it and saw it very far away,” said Susana.
Her most listened-to song on platforms is “Ya Me Cuido Yo”, and the most recent cut is “Si Es Que Tenga Que Doler,” produced by Argentine Sebastián Schon. The upcoming concert at the Foro del Tejedor will feature a program of around an hour and a half with songs of her own and some classics of Latin American folklore.
“It’s a little bit of everything, it’s a compendium of what I sing, what I like, what I know a lot about, and from Mexico I have a song prepared that I love; it’s my version, my interpretation, it’s ‘La Llorona’,” shared Susana.
