As is now more than consolidated custom, the Oscar appetizer was served: in fact, the Golden Globe ceremony took place during the night, awards awarded by a jury of journalists representing the foreign Hollywood press – now in their eighty-first edition – and often capable of providing strong indications on the favorite titles in the race for the most coveted statuettes in cinema. There were very few surprises compared to the predictions, except for the failure of “Barbie” which gave way to “Poor Creatures!” in the category of best film, comedy or musical.

But let’s go step by step in describing the award ceremony.

Compared to the awards given by the Academy, the Golden Globes divide their main categories between dramatic films on the one hand and musicals and comedies on the other: the best film of the first group was won by the amazing “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan, a feature film about of the life of the “father of the atomic bomb” and which confirmed once again the incredible talent of the English author, also winner in the category of best directors where he overcame the competition of Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”), Celine Song (“Past Lives”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Creatures”) and Bradley Cooper (“Master”).

Yorgos Lanthimos

As best comedy or musical film, however, “Poor Creatures!” triumphed, a feature film by Yorgos Lanthimos which already won the Golden Lion at the latest Venice Film Festival.

I captain

Nothing to do for “I Captain” in the category of best non-English language films. Matteo Garrone’s film was overtaken by “Anatomy of a Fall”, a French film directed by Justine Triet, winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. As for “I Captain”, we are now carefully awaiting Tuesday 23 January when the Oscar nominations will be announced, this year’s ceremony is scheduled for March 11.
