ROMA – At the Munich auto show, Hyundai announced its commitment to become “carbon neutral” by 2045. To achieve the ambitious goal of carbon neutrality, the Korean company has identified three pillars, namely clean mobility with the expansion of its green range; new generation platforms developed ad hoc and solutions based on green energy. Moreover, already by 2040, Hyundai is committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 75% compared to 2019 levels. In the field of clean mobility, the Seoul giant will gradually increase sales of zero-emission vehicles (Zevs) and by the end of 2030, aims to reach 30% of its global sales of these vehicles, while by 2040 it expects battery electric vehicles (Bev) and fuel cell electric vehicles (Fcev) to reach 80% of total sales. In addition, in Europe, the company plans to offer exclusively zero-emission vehicles starting in 2035, and by 2040, it will phase out all vehicles that use fossil fuels in the main markets.

The German show then served as the stage for the Prophecy electric prototype, which anticipates Ioniq 6, the next Hyundai battery-powered model focused on customized and ecological solutions. In 2023, however, the next model of the Nexo SUV will be presented and a new MPV always powered by hydrogen, while after 2025 the launch of a large SUV powered by fuel cells is expected. Hyundai has also made significant investments in the field of next-generation transport platforms for urban air mobility (Uam) and autonomous vehicles, and after the Uam S-A1 concept it intends to launch an all-electric one optimized for internal city activities (in 2030 it intends launch regional air mobility linking adjacent cities). In the field of green energy, Hyundai’s carbon neutral strategy aims to provide cleaner and greener energy solutions for all with the use of renewable energy in production plants and long-term investments in future technologies, such as green hydrogen based on renewable energy, Vehicle-to-grid and Second Life Battery Energy Storage System.
