Oscar Nominations 2024: Surprises, Milestones, and Controversies
The Oscar nominations for 2024 have brought with them surprises, disappointments, rejections, and satisfaction, as they do every year. This year, the presence of productions from other countries and languages has demonstrated the real opening of the Film Academy and the influence of members from around the world on the selections.
The ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon has made a significant impact on the nominations, with Oppenheimer reaching 13 nominations and becoming the favorite, while Barbie received 8 nominations. Additionally, foreign language films have shone in categories that were previously deemed unattainable.
French film Anatomy of a Fall and British film The Zone of Interest have both received 5 nominations, including best film and direction. Meanwhile, Korean film Past Lives received two nominations. In the Spanish language category, Chilean film La memoria infinite, Spanish film Robot Dreams, and The Snow Society by Juan Antonio Bayona have all received nominations in various categories.
The nomination of cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto for his work on Killers of the Flower Moon and Edward Lachman for his work on the Chilean film El conde have also been notable additions.
However, there have been notable snubs in the nominations, including director Greta Gerwig and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as surprises such as America Ferrera’s nomination for her role in Barbie.
Hollywood veterans Martin Scorsese and John Williams have increased their list of nominations, setting new records in the process, while unexpected nominations have also come in for films such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Napoleon.
The Oscar awards gala will take place on March 10 at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, and the influence of international cinema on this year’s nominations is clear.
