Japan’s box office revenue in 2021 is about 161.8 billion yen, the second lowest in history

According to NHK TV, according to statistics from the Japan Film Producers Union, the box office revenue of domestic films in Japan in 2021 will be 161.893 billion yen (about 8.99 billion yuan), although it is not the same as the record. The record low in 2020 is an increase of 13%, but only 62% of the box office revenue of 261.1 billion yen (about 14.49 billion yuan) in 2019. This is the second-lowest level in history since Japan began counting box office receipts in 2000.

Among them, the box office revenue of Japanese domestic films in 2021 will be 128.339 billion yen (about 7.12 billion yuan), an increase of 17% compared with 2020. Imported films are constantly affected by factors such as delays and cancellations, and the box office revenue in 2021 is 33.554 billion yen (about 1.86 billion yuan), setting a new record for 2020.
In addition, among the movies released after November 2020, there is only one animated movie “Neon Genesis Evangelion The Movie” that has a box office of more than 10 billion yen (about 560 million yuan).
