Hours after the Golden Globes ended, Jo Koy gave the first statements after her controversial joke against Taylor Swift
Jo Koy’s work as host of the 81st Golden Globe Awards will be remembered for being one of the most controversial in the history of the shortlist, especially for having insulted a figure with enormous drawing power such as Taylor Swift.
In the first minutes of the award show, Koy made a comment about Swift where he reiterated that the Golden Globes were not like the NFL, so the cameras were not going to be chasing the singer wherever she went.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes there are fewer shots of Taylor Swift,” Koy said verbatim while the cameras clearly showed that Taylor was not amused by the comment.
Reports indicate that Swift left the gala as soon as the winner of the category in which she was nominated was announced, due to how uncomfortable she felt about Koy’s comment. Of course, the networks were not far behind, and hundreds of fan groups shared their annoyance at the comment that they considered completely rude.
Just a few hours before the Golden Globes took place, Koy gave the first statements about this incident during the early hours of January 8, assuring Entertainment Tonight that it was something “adorable,” implying that the reactions were exaggerated
“Man, it’s been nice. He was just saying it was cute. I was just saying it’s less cuts, that’s all,” Koy explained.
The comedian’s joke refers to the way the NFL took advantage of Taylor Swift’s presence at Kansas City Chiefs games due to her relationship with tight end Travis Kelce. For several weeks, Swift appeared on stadium and television screens constantly, which, in fact, generated annoyance and even boos from National Football League fans.
In the face of this controversy, Taylor reiterated that it was not her intention to be on the stadium screens during games all the time, but she would continue to be present to support Travis. Likewise, he shared that he is not affected by the possibility of bothering parents with stereotypically sexist attitudes.
“There is a camera about half a mile away, and you don’t know where it is, and you have no idea when the camera shows you on the broadcast, so I don’t know if they show me 17 times or once. I’m just there to support Travis. The joke against Taylor Swift was not the only one that generated controversy during the Golden Globes.
