Nino Cerruti, the famous Italian fashion designer who was known as a pioneer in the fashion industry and who pioneered the trend of men’s clothing in the last century, has died at the age of 91.

Ceruti died in a hospital in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday. The cause of his death was not disclosed, but he was recently admitted to the hospital for hip surgery.

Cerruti, the founder of the famous brand “Cerruti 1881”, became a leading figure in the design of men’s fashion in the 20th century. He is best at combining Italian handmade traditions, British color matching and French tailoring styles, and the streamlined design style gives people unprecedented surprises, establishing an epoch-making status for Cerruti brand menswear.

People from all walks of life in Italy mourned his passing. “A giant of Italian business has left us,” said the government’s deputy economic development minister, Picheto.

Ceruti’s grandfather opened a textile factory in the northern town of Biella as early as 1881. Born in 1930, Cerutti wanted to be a journalist, but when his father died at the age of 20, he was forced to drop his philosophy courses and go home to take over the family’s textile business.

In the 1960s, he met another master fashion designer, Giorgio Armani. The two cherished each other and made a name for themselves in the fashion industry. Cerutti was always the first to try on new ideas and designs. He once told reporters: “I often dress for one person: myself.”

Cerutti opened his first fashion store in Paris in 1967, launched his own brand, and became a figure in the fashion industry. In the 1970s, he designed the first women’s clothing, saying that trousers gave women freedom.

Nicknamed “The Philosopher of Clothing”, Cerutti has designed clothing for Hollywood stars including Richard Gere, Robert Liefort and French actor Jean-Paul Bermondo; in the 1990s he designed uniforms for the Ferrari Formula 1 racing team .

In 1996 and 1998, he made cameo appearances in two Hollywood films, Cannes Man and Holy Man.
