In a surprising turn of events, Marvel Studios productions are no longer the guaranteed box office hits they once were. The latest report on box office revenues shows that Marvel’s latest film brought in only $88 million globally, a stark difference from the usual success the studio has seen in the past.
But Marvel isn’t the only one feeling the sting of disappointing box office numbers. The DC superhero blockbuster “The Flash” has suffered a massive loss of $155 million. With a production cost of $200 million, a publicity and distribution cost of $120 million, and other expenses totaling $80.5 million, the film failed to recoup its expenses, making it Warner’s biggest loss-making movie of the year.
The top five net losses in 2023 are as follows:
1. “Captain Marvel 2”: Loss of $237 million (Disney Marvel)
2. “The Flash”: Loss of $155 million (Warner DC)
3. “Raiders of the Lost Ark”: Loss of $143 million (Disney Lucasfilm)
4. “Star Wish”: Loss of $131 million (Disney Animation)
5. “The Haunting of Hill House”: Loss of $117 million (Disney’s live-action)
With these significant losses in mind, it seems that even the biggest studios in Hollywood are not immune to the ups and downs of the box office. Only time will tell if these setbacks are just temporary hurdles or if they signal a larger shift in the industry.
