ROME – Can the bicycle, the ecological vehicle par excellence, be made even more sustainable? To this question, Mondraker, an elite Spanish company producing precious (and expensive) off-road bikes, has tried to give an affirmative answer by creating a packaging system produced with recycled materials and in turn completely recyclable. From this year all the packaging of his bicycles is 100% plastic-free and even the ties and foam pads have been eliminated, to prevent these materials from ending up where they never should have ended up (seas, mountains, landfills …) .
The company’s R&D department therefore designed, starting from scratch, a box and all its internal protective elements. One of the main objectives of the design of the new containers, in addition to using only 100% recyclable materials, was that the bicycles should have a level of protection at least as high as in the past. In the end, the result has brought greater protection and an arrangement of components that facilitates and speeds up assembly operations by users, and the overall volume is less than that of the previous boxes.
And it doesn’t stop there because the adhesive tape for the internal padding is made of rice, the security seal on the box is made with potato pulp, all the stickers are organic, the ink of the writing is organic and biodegradable and inside of the boxes there are two reusable velcro strips for other uses.
“The plastic products used to date for bicycle packaging have caused the emission of significant quantities of pollutants into the atmosphere, and as such any reduction in the use of these products will result in a direct improvement in the quality of the bicycle. air we breathe – underline at the Alicante headquarters – We at Mondraker believe that it makes perfect sense that bicycles should generate as little waste as possible, from their manufacture to the end user. For this reason we feel committed and ethically obliged to generate as little pollution as possible in all stages of production, from start to finish “.
