ROME – In Europe the bike mania has exploded with positive repercussions on the entire reference industry. 2020 for Italy was a record year with over two million units sold (+ 17% on 2019), but for the Old Continent market it was a real boom with the all-time high of the last twenty years and more. of 22 million pieces sold (EU and UK, classic bikes and e-bikes). Overall, the market reached a value of 18.3 billion euro with a growth of 40% compared to the previous year. The confirmation of the positive trend comes from the report of the European Confederation of the bicycle, e-bike, components and accessories industry (Conebi) on the industry of the sector in Europe, disseminated in Italy by the National Association of cycle motorcycle accessories (Confindustria Ancma).

“The EU industry continues its constant growth, with 2020 confirming itself as the best year since we started analyzing the data – explained Erhard Büchel, president of Conebi – Investments have exceeded 1.5 billion euros, compared to € 1 billion in 2019. This has fueled unprecedented production growth across the EU area. The production of parts and accessories also increased to reach 3 billion euros, which highlights the positive impact on the entire production value chain. However, the current situation of the global supply chain represents an important signal: we need to invest more in local production; we need to invest more in Europe. Based on current projections, we expect the value of parts and accessories produced in Europe to double to € 6 billion by 2025 ”.

The desire for more sustainable mobility has led e-bikes to record a strong increase in sales of 52% with the market reaching 10.6 billion euros last year. Furthermore, 3.6 of the 4.5 million e-bikes sold between the EU and the UK were produced in Europe, a figure which stands at 80% in percentage terms. All this has a positive impact on employment with an increase of 30% in 2020 compared to 2019 and, according to the Conebi report, for every 1,000 bikes produced every year in Europe, 3 to 5 jobs are created, while for every 1,000 e -bike, 6 to 9 jobs are generated. “The data contained in the Conebi report – underlined Paolo Magri, president of Confindustria Ancma – tell of the moment of success of bicycles, but at the same time show how much work the sector and the legislator still have in front of them in enhancing this growth trend, the use of bicycles, in creating opportunities for emancipation and further growth “.
