Fatty liver disease due to diabetes is possible even in children

A poorly controlled disease is associated with a high risk of additional fatty liver disease at a young age. This is the result of a new study by Austrian and German researchers.

Around 1,600 children and young people under the age of 15 are affected by type 1 diabetes in Austria alone. It is an autoimmune disease in which insulin production in the pancreas completely breaks down. If blood sugar control works poorly in the long term, there is a risk of additional health problems. These include classic diabetes complications such as vascular, kidney and retinal damage. Studies are now showing a connection between type 1 diabetes and fatty liver disease. “The study underlines how important effective management of diabetes is,” say the researchers.
