The band from Würzburg with the brilliant name PAULINCHEN BRENNT – taken from the fairytale book classic “Struwwelpeter” – has been up to loud mischief since 2013. Now they are finally presenting their first real album with “Mache” and behind the eerily beautiful artwork there is an uncompromising tour de force in every respect that may demand a lot from the listeners.
The band offers an angry mix of screamo, noise and mathcore. Although people often make comparisons with THE HIRSCH EFFECT’s compatriots, probably because of their origins, PAULINCHEN BRENNT is clearly influenced by bands like THE BLOOD BROTHERS and SINCE BY MAN. The artistic ambition of “Mache” is also reminiscent of the latter. The tempo in songs like “Norman” or “Pooter” is mostly at full speed, only in the instrumental “Caprona” do the guys give the listeners a short break.
The lyrics are in either English or German, although the latter suits them much better, as the heavily grooving “Midas” clearly underlines. The fact that not everything on “Mache” should be taken so seriously is revealed by “Shinoda”, which seems to be about Mike Shinoda from LINKIN PARK. Before “Havser” and “Chia” successfully round off the “Mini” album with its almost 25 minutes.
“Mache” is a challenging but extremely rewarding listen, and PAULINCHEN BRENNT’s material is sure to go down like a suppository, especially live. Let’s hope that the trio will make it on a club tour to Austria in the foreseeable future, an absolute must for everyone who can relate to the bands mentioned here (with the possible exception of the Nu Metal band).
