Planet Earth, an Italian restaurant located in the bustling Beulingstraat in the heart of Amsterdam, was recently named the best Italian restaurant in the Netherlands. Since we had been curious about Pianeta Terra for some time, this recognition naturally aroused our interest even more. That’s why we went there to tell you all about it.

Top 50 in the world

Pianeta Terra was recently awarded as the best Italian restaurant in the Netherlands according to ’50 Top Italy 2024′. Chef Fabio Antonini, sommelier Laura Martini and manager Raul Mini are the passionate driving forces behind this Italian restaurant.

Creative cooking

The kitchen is all about intuition and respecting the essence of pure ingredients. At Pianeta Terra, modern cooking techniques are used to accentuate flavors. As advocates of the Slow Food Alliance, they embrace food biodiversity and work closely with local suppliers and ‘The Kitchen of the Unwanted Animal’. Here, animals that are usually considered a nuisance (such as crows and coots) are used in dishes. The menu offers a choice of three, four, five or seven courses.

An evening at Pianeta Terra

Our evening at Pianeta Terra started with a warm welcome from the staff. We were led to a beautifully laid table and enjoyed a Winter Spritz and a Martini vermouth. We also got a croquette of goat cheese and orange, served with rutabaga mesh. It was delicious and a special start to an unforgettable evening.

We were then spoiled with buffalo mozzarella, accompanied by a lentil terrine from Ustica, an island in the Sicilian sea. Kimchi and chicorino with a hint of balsamic added an intriguing twist to this dish. The Cardito Malvasia Puntinata wine, with notes of peach and grapefruit, complemented this dish perfectly. The grilled calamari with aspic of escabeche mussels, artemide rice, herring eggs and ice herb was a delicious successor.

Homemade pasta

The next two courses we were surprised with homemade pasta. First we were treated to tortelloni filled with pumpkin, ricotta, tarragon and truffle. Really delicious! Then we enjoyed homemade spaghetti with langoustine and cockles. We drank a delicious Zi bi Bò, an organic Sicilian white wine from Valdibella. We then tasted halibut and scallop with vegetables in an enchanting bisque sauce, also a real treat.

Steak from the Veluwe and sweet endings

The main course consisted of a steak of red deer from the Veluwe with cime di rapa, split pea puree, pumpkin and a tropical sauce. The red La Casa di Sophia 2020 wine tasted perfect with this. Then, as icing on the cake, we enjoyed two different desserts. Our choice fell on the visciole sorbet with orange, pistachio and kumquat cialde and the delicious chocolate cheesecake with crumble and a chocolate-coffee-rum sauce.

Our visit to Pianeta Terra pleasantly surprised us. Each course offered a unique taste experience with carefully chosen ingredients and perfectly matched wines. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. After this evening we completely understand that this restaurant is one of the best Italian restaurants in the world. We enjoyed it very much and can highly recommend Pianeta Terra!
